Why I Don’t Recommend the Haakaa Pump (and What to Use Instead)

If you’ve been scrolling through breastfeeding tips online, chances are you’ve seen someone recommend the Haakaa pump. It’s that silicone pump that suctions onto the breast and collects milk—often promoted as an easy way to build a freezer stash without much effort.

Sounds great, right?

Well, as a lactation consultant, I want to offer a gentle caution: I don’t recommend using the Haakaa pump during feedings—and here’s why.

The Problem with the Haakaa: It’s Not Passive

The biggest misconception about the Haakaa is that it’s just catching the milk that would otherwise leak. But that’s not what’s happening.

When you suction a Haakaa pump onto your breast, it actively removes milk. It works more like a manual pump than a milk collector. That means your body gets the signal: “Hey! The baby needs more milk!” even though your baby didn’t actually drink that extra milk.

The result? Your body ramps up milk production.

What’s the Big Deal with Oversupply?

At first, more milk might sound like a good thing—especially when so many moms worry about not making enough. But too much milk brings its own set of problems:

  • Forceful letdown: The milk may come out too fast for your baby to handle, making feedings stressful or uncomfortable.

  • Gassiness and fussiness: Your baby might take in more air while trying to keep up with the flow.

  • Frequent clogged ducts: With milk being removed more than needed, your body can’t keep up with the extra milk, leading to clogs and even mastitis.

  • Disrupted feeding rhythms: Your baby might end up feeding less efficiently because your body is out of sync with what your baby actually needs.

Oversupply can turn something simple and sweet into something overwhelming—for both you and your baby.

A Better Option: Passive Milk Collectors

If your goal is to catch milk that would otherwise soak into a breast pad, there are gentler ways to do that without stimulating your body to make more.

Here are some of my favorite passive milk collectors:

  • Milkies Milk-Saver: Slides into your bra and collects milk that drips during letdown—no suction, no stimulation.

  • Ladybugs: Worn inside your bra and designed for discrete milk collection throughout the day. Use without suction.

  • Shell-style milk collectors: These are soft, rounded shells that sit over your nipple inside your bra and collect any leaking milk. Use without suction.

These tools don’t apply suction and don’t signal your body to produce more—they just help you save what would otherwise be lost. That’s the kind of support we like to see.

Final Thoughts

I know the Haakaa can be tempting, especially when you’re trying to build a stash or avoid wasting precious milk. But if you’re already producing enough for your baby, adding extra stimulation can cause more issues than it solves.

Passive milk collection can give you the best of both worlds—saving milk without creating an oversupply.
